The Piaggio Avanti began as a collaboration between the Italian company and Gates Learjet in 1981,but by 1986 was all Italian. The first prototype flew in 1986 and deliveries began in late 1990 certified for single pilot operation. The forward canard allowed the Avanti’s wing to be positioned at the rear of the fuselage, allowing maximum cabin space for six passengers. The empennage, engine nacelles, outboard wing flaps, gear doors and canard are carbon composite construction.
