Avidyne Announces Software Developer Kit; Updates PC-Based Simulator For IFD540 & IFD440
Two different SDKs that will be made available.
Avidyne Corporation announced a new Software Developer Kit (SDK) that allows third-party developers to create applications for smartphones and portable tablet devices using the wireless data streams coming out of the IFD540 and IFD440 FMS/GPS/NAV/COMs.
Dan Schwinn, Avidyne's President and CEO said, "Our open-architecture SDK makes the data stream available not only for professional app developers, several of whom we are already working with, but also for students, flight schools, and even hobbyists who want to create new and innovative solutions for the pilot community."
Two different SDKs that will be made available. Tier 1 developers who are creating applications that only require receiving of the wireless data stream (read-only) will be able to easily register, accept the royalty-free licensing agreement, and download the SDK from the Avidyne website.
Tier 2 developers, those who plan to create apps that send data back to the IFD540/440 (read/write), will need to apply separately and complete a more thorough vetting process and testing protocol before their specific app will be approved and authorized by Avidyne.
Avidyne expects the Tier 1 SDK to be available in Q3 2015. Tier 2 app developers should contact Avidyne for details.
Avidyne also announced that a new version of its IFD-Series FMS/GPS/NAV/COM PC-based Simulator software is now available for download from its website. The updated PC simulator provides fully interactive, free-play demonstration capability for the IFD540 and IFD440 including all the features of the recently certified Release 10.1 IFD software.
"In addition to adding all the other R10.1 features, this is our first version of IFD simulator software that enables the use of the USB port on the PC, so now customers with an IFD540/440 can transfer settings between the PC and their actual unit in their aircraft," said Dan Schwinn, Avidyne CEO. "This is not only beneficial for product familiarization, but also an easy way for pilots to create custom checklists, user settings, datablock configurations, and routes in the comfort of their home, then take them out to the airplane and quickly reconfigure their IFD with the exact same settings."
This new software also allow users to run dual instances of the IFD540 or IFD440 or one of each at the same time, with full interaction between the two, emulating a dual IFD installation in the aircraft.
The R10.1 version of the IFD540/IFD440 PC Simulator is now available for free download from the Avidyne website at: http://www.avidyne.com/products/ifd540/demo-sim-signup.asp.
