Why Winds Are No Fair

When we were newbie pilots, most of us made the assumption that in the end tailwinds and headwinds would cancel each other out. Such a belief goes hand in hand with ideas such as "life is fair," "good guys always win," and "the Cubs are due this year!" The more we fly, however, the more we realize that headwinds rule. What we also learn, however, is that even if life isn't always fair, there are some altitudes under certain conditions that can make it seem a little less cruel.
